Last week
the Museum of History of the City (MUHBA)
organized two days of studies regarding Barcelona’s wall, and they have
reached the conclusion that it’s one century older (S.III) than they previously thought (s.IV). The
townhouse, who took part of this journeys,
is decided to promote the actions taken to make the wall more visible
and turn it to a tourist focus attraction, but before it’s imperative to look
for a unitary plan for the whole wall, because previously every time a new
piece was discovered it was reahabilited either by public or private architects
according to their own criteria.
In the next
few months, two different pieces will be rehabilited: on one side, a tower wall in the square “Traginers”, wich will be opened to public when the works
are finished, and in the other side, 40 meters of Barcelona’s wall, wich is
still covered by some buildings attached to it. Therefore, those will be soon
demolished (according to the news in the next 5 months) despite the complaints
of some neighbours.
The
demolishment costs will be payed on a 50% by the townhouse, and in the other
50% by the Estate- Agent LAKITANIA, wich
is building a luxury hotel designed by the architect Rafael Moneo attached to
Barcelona’s wall. The project was only accepted after the engagement that the hotel would let
free access to all the pieces of
interest, including the wall but also gothic pieces from XVII century and
medieval paints.
It seems as
all this history is slowly coming up: last March, with no special promotion on
the news, the museum also rehabilited 17 more meters of the wall and also
discovered some hot springs from Ist Century just a few meters away in Regomir
str. It’s kind of a pitty that the citizens haven’t really noticed yet this
heritage right in the heart of the gothic quarter.
We will
keep an eye on the demolishments and the progress of this hotel construccion, and
we will net you know as soon as we can, as it is lively story of the city still
to discover.More information in spanish on this link from the national newsletter " El Pais"
